the snorkel was a deal breaker
by Francine DuBois

too many cartoons
have trained her
that snorkels will fail
or, more correctly, will be sabotaged.

a gopher will clog it with a potato,
a duck will squat on top,
a goose will drop ping-pong balls inside--
the terror never stops.

there are days
when she'd like to use
vanishing cream and really
go aay, or disappear into

a painting. but all to often
she's noticed that she's spent
her entire life
looking down, then falling. (yikes!)
